Your Dining Room Rug Guide - How to find the right sized rug!

Creating a warm and inviting dining space starts with choosing the right rug. Not only does it add a touch of elegance and charm, but it also provides comfort and protection for your floors. However, with so many options available, finding the perfect rug can be overwhelming. Here’s our guide to help you with the process of selecting the perfect dining room rug for your home!

      1. Practicality and Easy Maintenance:

Choose a jute rug or machine made rug as a practical and easy to clean dining room rug

When it comes to a dining room rug, practicality is key. Choosing a rug that is both beautiful and easy to clean will save you money, time and effort in the long run.
One excellent choice is a jute rug. Its natural fibres make it durable, stain-resistant, and easy to maintain. Jute rugs are perfect for high-traffic areas, ensuring your dining room remains pristine even after a big dinner with the family.
Machine made rugs are also a great option as they are super easy to clean and can be washed and vacuumed regularly. This takes away the stress of stains and spills that can come with having a dining room rug.

      1. Size Matters:

Make sure the rug is bigger than the dining table, otherwise it won't look right in the space

Choosing the right size rug is essential to achieve a cohesive look and enhance the overall dining experience. A common mistake is selecting a rug that is too small. To find the perfect balance, ensure the rug extends beyond the edges of your dining table, allowing enough space for chairs to comfortably fit on the rug. This creates a visual anchor and defines the dining area within the room.

Top tip: drag your dining chairs out a little and measure the space, this way the chairs will always sit on the rug and there won’t be any tripping hazards when pulling the chairs in and out.

      1. Round Rug for a Round Table:

Pick a round rug for a round dining table to achieve maximum cohesion of your space

If you have a round dining table, consider opting for a round rug. This shape adds harmony and symmetry to your dining space, emphasising the table's form. A round rug also encourages smooth movement around the table, making it convenient for guests to pull out their chairs without catching on the corners of a rectangular rug.

Finding the perfect rug for your dining room doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. With these tips you can easily find your ideal dining room rug. The most important things to remember are that you want practicality - a rug that’s durable and easy maintenance. You want a rug that is the right size, remembering the dining chairs trick! Finally, you want cohesion in your space, you want to find the rug shape that suits your dining area - sometimes this can mean that you have to consider a round rug rather than the regular rectangle rug size. Happy rug hunting!

How to clean a rug yourself: the at-home rug cleaning tips you need to know!

If your google search looks like how to get stains out of rugs? and how to wash a wool rug, you've come to the right place! When you’ve had your rug for a while you know that sometimes rugs need a bit more than just a regular vacuum - especially if you have kids or pets. Dirt and dust can build up over time and needs to be cleaned. With some research and knowledge, cleaning rugs can go from being daunting to something you’ve become a complete pro at! Here are our tips on how to clean your rug.

Which type of rug do you have?

The type of rug you have will depend on how it can be cleaned.
If you’re unsure, this information is usually on the label on the underside of the rug.

Polypropylene machine made rugs (generally made in Turkey) are quite hard wearing and heavy duty. This means that you can really deep clean these rugs at home without much trouble.

Wool rugs need to be treated with care and depending on the type of clean you have in mind, we generally recommend leaving deep cleans to a rug cleaning professional.

How to spot clean spills on your rug?

Before searching for where to buy rugs near me or how to find your perfect rugs, it is important to know how to clean them.

If something has been spilled on your rug, the first step is to blot out the liquid. Gently press a cloth or paper towel onto the affected area to lift any dirt that has been absorbed into the fibres of the rug. Once you have removed all that you can with blotting, create a cleaning solution using white vinegar, dish detergent and warm water in a spray bottle.

💡TOP TIP: Do not rub in the liquid, as this will push the spill in more and spread the stain.

Can I clean my area rug myself?

Absolutely! We recommend that you check the suitability of the solution with the material your rug is made from to ensure that you don’t damage your rug.
Start by vacuuming your rug with a vacuum cleaner. Then spot treat any stains using mild detergents or store-bought carpet cleaning solution that's designed specially for upholstery and carpets.

Once the rug is free of moisture, it should be put back in its designated area.

How do you deep clean a dirty rug?

Start by vacuuming the surface. This will remove all lost dirt, dust and debris from between the fibres. Then combine some mild cleaning detergent with warm water in a bucket or bowl to create a cleaning solution. Use a sponge or damp cloth and very gently start to scrub the rug’s surface until all stains are removed.

The last step is to rinse off using cold or icy water and let it air dry completely before putting it back on your floor. Ensure it dries fully before putting it back on the floor to avoid smells and further stains.

💡TOP TIP: For best results, have your large rugs professionally cleaned every 6-12 months depending on usage and foot traffic to maintain their beauty and longevity.
